An eagerly awaited park has opened its gates for the first time in Stamford Road, Tottenham.
Featuring a new children’s playground, seating areas, footpaths, plants and trees, the park has been developed based on feedback from the local community. ‘Friends of the Park’, a local residents’ group, worked in partnership with contractors Diamond Build Group to design and create the space.
Diamond Build Group, which has been based in Stamford Road for more than 40 years, is also building a new £28m mixed-use development on the same street. The park is located adjacent to the new scheme on land which was formerly overgrown and had become a hotbed for anti-social behaviour.
Wendy Cooke, a member of ‘Friends of the Park’, said: “We began the process with a survey to find out what local residents wanted and then worked in partnership with Diamond Build to make it happen. We progressed the plans through regular meetings and events, and this collaboration has been key to the project’s success. There are lots of new developments progressing in Tottenham and as a community we’re usually ignored. Diamond Build however, genuinely listened to what we wanted rather than trying to tell us what we needed.”
The park was officially opened on Saturday 10 June 2023 with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Stamford Road residents, representatives from Diamond Build Group, and South Tottenham ward councillors Sheila Peacock and Makbule Gunes. Joanne McCartney, Deputy Mayor of London and Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, also visited the park on the day.
Wendy continued: “I can’t tell you what difference this park will make to our community. I’ve lived just around the corner for 18 years and never once let my children go near the space. Now, I can’t wait to bring my grandchildren here. And it’s not just young families that will benefit. I know there are older people in the area who will welcome an attractive place to come and sit outside and socialise with others.”
Paul Brooks, Service Support Director at Diamond Build Group added: “It’s been a pleasure to work with Wendy and everyone at Friends of the Park to bring this fantastic new park to the area. Our partnership has resulted in a very attractive space, designed to meet the needs of the local community. Having been actively involved in all the meetings and events, it’s very rewarding to see the park come to fruition, which I’m sure will benefit residents here for many years to come.”
The new £28m mixed-use development being constructed by Diamond Build Group in Stamford Road comprises 48 new homes and 13,000 sq ft of office space; one half is set to become the contractor’s new head office and the other half will be offered to local Haringey businesses at affordable rent.
